Guidelines about registering domain name:  

In Australia a .COM.AU domain name can serve as a good URL for your business, however globally registering of a .COM domain is very good idea. Usually the .COM domains are cheaper, but internet market is a global market and before you know your business could be expanding globally. Wouldn't you hate to find out after some time that you MISSED OUT. It did happened to few ....

Other consideration of use when registering domain:

.com.au or .net.au : you must be an Australian registered company, or business with a registered business number (ABN, BRN, BN). The domain name you order should have a solid relationship to the business it represents. Place names in Australia are disallowed. Can be 2 to 63 letters, and words can be separated by hyphens, but not spaces

org.au or asn.au : To qualify for these domains your organisation must be a "non-commercial organisation". The domain name you register should have a solid relationship to the organisation to which it represents.

For example: The Salvation Army are reasonably entitled to own domain name:-

AU.COM, .COM, .BIZ, .NET, .INFO, .ORG
These domain names are not restricted or regulated by .au Policy Rules. They are therefore policy free and anyone can register any domain name. If you own a company name, or a trademark, register an .au.com domain name to prevent anyone else registering that name.

Consumer Alert auDA warms Australian businesses to be wary of American domain name organisation

.au Domain Administration (auDA), the administrator of .au domain names, today issued a warning to all Australian businesses with domain names, and those likely to register domain names in the future, to be wary of an organisation trading as Federal Bureau of Domain Names (FBODN), http://www.fbodn.com.

auDA has been informed that FBODN has contacted several Australian businesses – including an internationally renowned Australian icon – falsely positioning itself as the global domain name administrator. (read more)

com.au and net.au domain registrations exceed 500,000

The combined number of .com.au and .net.au domain names reaching 500,000 confirmed the success of the .au regime and demonstrated Australian business’ unwavering enthusiasm for the Internet according to the CEO of the .au Domain Administration (auDA), Mr Chris Disspain.
Mr Disspain said after just two and a half years in control of the .au domain name space, auDA, working with its licensed registry AusRegistry, auDA accredited registrars and their resellers, had established one of the world’s best domain name regimes.(read more)
